Monday Musings

For the week of January 5th, 2014...

Plans for this week

Today is the first day we will back to our regular routine. I am hoping it goes smoothly, but not really expecting it to. Rose is definitely excited about getting back to gymnastics, she has missed going to her weekly practices. I know Grace is looking forward to riding lessons beginning again (indoors, thankfully). The boys have decided to take the winter off from extracurriculars, which is just fine by me. No special plans for this week other than easing back into things and yet another orthodontist appointment. And taking down the Christmas decorations! I am really looking forward to getting all that living room space back and not dealing with all the tree needles.

Thinking about

Birthday shopping. Christopher has a birthday later this month and I need to get planning his gifts. I am also thinking about the garden and debating some whether to plant more blueberry bushes and which seeds to order. Fun stuff.

Homeschool notes
I think I have everyone's work organized for the week. I will hopefully finish up The Golden Goblet with the older two this week. It feels like we have been reading that book forever! Other than that, the big thing this week is just getting used to some structure again after so many weeks off.

Out of doors

We finally have a little snow on the ground, but it is frozen and slushy. Not sledding snow yet. It has been bitterly cold and then unseasonably warm, off and on. Strange weather. We went for a nice long walk in the woods last week. I forgot my camera, which is unfortunate because we found a really cool skull (maybe a deer?)  and some neat ice patterns.

In the kitchen

The kids are back to their regular cook nights this week. The boys are making an easy spaghetti carbonara and Grace is making fried rice. I meant to bake bread over the weekend but did not get to that. I have been kind of offended lately at the price for a loaf of decent store-bought bread so I've been making our bread for the week, which is surprisingly easy.  I tried this recipe first and it is pretty much perfect. I have made it many times already and it is our go-to bread. The recipe is easy, tastes good, makes two loaves, and the bread lasts at least a week without going stale. We don't eat a lot of sandwiches, so two loaves last us all week for toast, an occasional pb & j, and bread and butter.

Watching & reading

I am challenging myself to read 52 books in 52 weeks (post coming on this, I think). I am hoping to finish up Cutting for Stone this week. I am also reading Barnheart. This week with the kids we watched The Empire Strikes Back, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Puss in Boots. Without the kids we started watching Nowhere in Africa but haven't finished it yet.

Three photos
Rose's amaryllis finally in bloom, just in time for the New Year.

A new-to-us New Year's Eve activity. The kids took turns popping one balloon per hour, starting at 1 p.m. and ending at 12 a.m. I think this will be a regular yearly event, they enjoyed it so much.

Cheers to a New Year!

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Happy New Year!

Getting back into the regular routine IS a bit of a challenge, isn't it? We made some decent headway yesterday, hoping to get a little more done today.

And I love the lunar calendar in your previous post. My mom always had one when I was growing up.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!
