Christmas Days

We spent some time celebrating the Solstice this weekend. We took a nice long walk in the woods, made some treats for the birds and filled up the birdfeeder, had a backyard campfire, and drove around to look at Christmas lights.

I like thinking of Christmas as a season rather than just a day. This is one thing I think we get a little better at each year, this idea of making the whole season fun and festive and not putting all the focus on the one day. Because that can be a bit of a letdown, on the day after. So I like celebrating St. Nicholas Day, and having Peppermint Day, and celebrating the Solstice. We don't do anything fancy on those days, but they feel like little holidays in their own right, which is nice. We also celebrate a few after-Christmas days, like Boxing Day and New Year's Eve and New Year's Day....each with it's own little traditions. I would like to come up with some more little traditions for after Christmas.

For now, the kids have the first few presents wrapped up and under the tree, with great ceremony of course, and the last advent candle has been lit .We have a little bit of snow but there is lots of rain on the way, so I think it will be a green Christmas. The colorful little orbs above are the gifts Rose is giving out this year. They started out as those clear plastic ornaments you can find everywhere. Just pop the top off, squirt a couple different colors of paint inside, and shake and roll them around until the paint covers the whole inside surface. They come out so pretty! We are leaving ours upside down to drain out entirely before packaging them up.

I wish you all a very merry holiday week and I'll be back some time next week.
