Monday Musings

For the week of January 20th, 2014

***Outside my window...The super cold weather is heading back our way. I am glad that we were able to take some time to be outside this weekend. And we had a little snow! Not wet enough to make a snowman though, much to Rose's disappointment.

***Things I'm thinking about...The vegetable garden. I've been getting my seed order ready, which is always fun. Also, birthdays. Christopher turns 11 this week!

***Barn & garden happenings...We had some snow over the weekend, which pretty much put a stop to the chickens free-ranging. A couple hardy souls will venture out even in the snow, but most of them stay "cooped-up". I ended up getting them a flock block for entertainment. I am also hoping that the block will keep them from just sitting around eating their pellets all day. Chickens are not cheap to feed when you have more than a few and the cost is just getting ridiculous. Still, I want to order more.

***In our kitchen...We made Rice Krispy treats over the weekend. Not exactly gourmet fare, but we haven't made these in forever, so I was pretty excited. I am trying to add to my list of easy dinners. I have been trying to cook too fancy lately. I like to cook a little fancy sometimes, but I do not like the time it takes or the clean-up afterwards. Easy is where it's at.

*** In our homeschool... Rose and I will start "rowing" Katy and the Big Snow this week. I have been trying to be better about pre-reading the kids' readers. Grace will be reading Breaking Stalin's Nose this week and I read it over the weekend. I really enjoyed this one! Not an uplifting tale, but a page-turner, for sure.

***Creating...I am still making a hat. I am determined to finish it this week!

***Reading and watching... I am watching and loving Downton Abbey. I am already sad about it ending! It has such a short season. I have been reading The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener as I make my seed list. It is a great book, but it makes me a little too tempted to try to grow everything under the sun. We watched Welcome to the Dollhouse over the weekend, without the kids. It made me quite glad that we homeschool.

***A few plans for the week...All the usual things, plus Christopher's birthday, which is he is so very excited about.

**** A photo from the weekend... my snowy view

Have a wonderful week!

  3. Thanks for the bday wishes. And the catalog recommendation! I had heard of them but never looked them up till just now-and I had to request a catalog immediately;).
