monday musings

For the week of January 13th, 2014

***Outside my window...It was warm over the weekend-well, in the 40's, which is warm for here. It was kind of nice to go outside and not be totally freezing for a change. But then we had rain, which took away all the snow. No sledding this week.

***Things I'm thinking about...Vacation plans. I always think about this in January, for some reason. Probably because it isn't so nice outside, and it is fun to imagine a time when it will be nice and we can get away for a few days. I am thinking a trip to Gettysburg for the spring. My Civil War buff has been asking.

***Barn & garden happenings...We have tiny little green leaves on our Swiss chard plants in the cold frame! I planted radish seeds in there too, but they aren't doing anything so far.

***In our kitchen...I need new snack ideas for the kids. These kids can eat! I have decided I need to plan snacks for the week, just like meals. This week's ideas are Greek yogurt with frozen berries and rice cakes with peanut butter and dried cranberries.

*** In our homeschool... Times Tables the Fun Way is going well, though it's too early to say if it is working. Grace has started Life of Fred Elementary Physics and is doing well with it so far. This week we are scheduled to do a Japanese tea ceremony for Core F.

***Creating...I am still making a hat. I finally got around to framing my sampler which I made ages ago. It was a pain to frame and I could not get all the wrinkles out, but I am still pretty happy with it.

***Reading and watching... The kids and I started watching Mankind The Story of Us. I am reading The Leftovers.

***A few plans for the week...All the usual things, plus birthday shopping for Christopher. Grace starts her winter riding program this week. Bathroom renovations are on again, after a break for the holidays. This week we are doing lighting and replacing the mirror.

**** A photo from the weekend...before the snow got washed away. I planted tulip bulbs months ago so we could have them for winter. Now that they are opening up, I am so glad I took the time. It is very heartening to see and smell a little bit of spring in the middle of winter.

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Snacks are the bane of my existence, too. I can only do cheese sticks and cottage cheese and fruit for so long before they start asking what else there is. I need to pick up some rice cakes again. Those are effective. Peanut butter is also handy. Hard-boiled eggs work, too. Love the tulip. I'm ready for spring.

  2. I love tulips, definitely a favorite spring flower! And snacks... arrgh. We do a lot of fruit, sometimes veggies and hummus, nuts, string cheese, hard boiled eggs... I keep meaning to try out homemade Lara bars, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

  3. I should definitely get in the habit of making hard-boiled eggs again. If only the chickens would lay through the winter. I used to make hummus a lot and haven't in awhile, that would also be great to do. I am trying to keep a list for inspiration.
