Monday Musings

For the week of November 18th, 2013

Outside My Window...Chilly, rainy, windy....seems like a good day to stay indoors, but we are heading out on our yearly quest to buy fruitcake mix from a store two hours away. Kind of crazy, but it's tradition. And very good fruitcake.

Things I'm Thinking About...The holidays. I really prefer an earlier Thanksgiving so I can focus on one, then the other holiday. With such a late Thanksgiving there is too much to think of all at once. And DD12 has a birthday between. To-do lists are in order, fast.

Barn & Garden Happenings..I never got my tomato cages out last week. Maybe this week. Somehow it is very difficult to persuade myself to get out in the cold and finish putting the garden to bed. I did finally plant the allium bulbs I had languishing in the refrigerator.

In Our Kitchen...We have been making a bigger dinner for Sunday noontime and then just having leftovers for supper. It feels very old-fashioned and Grandma-like. I love it. And clean-up Sunday night is fabulously minimal.
In Our Homeschool... We will be starting our Thanksgiving unit by midweek. DD12 is still plugging away on Nanowrimo and DS8 does it occasionally. I have been making a point of keeping their regular work shorter on busy days so they can still fit it in. DD5 and I should finish rowing How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, just in time to start Cranberry Thanksgiving.

Creating...I had to rip apart the hat I started last week after realizing I cast on way too many stitches and it was-huge. I should really have just stopped and made a gauge swatch at that point, but I was lazy, so I cast on fewer stitches and just started again. Hopefully it will work out this time.

Reading and Watching... I just started reading Folks, This Ain't Normal.

A Few Plans For the Week Ahead...Getting myself organized for the busy season ahead, I hope! Racking my brain for gifts for an almost-teen who says she doesn't need  much of anything. Buying advent calendars. A trip to a dinosaur museum and the Lego store, both things that have been asked after for months.

Hope you have a great week!

  1. Almost-teens are hard! Lots of little things and gift cards to various shops. And clothes. That's about all I'm doing for that one this year. The younger one still wants lots of stuff, big and little. I agree that the late holiday is making things tougher. Everything just runs together. Drives me crazy.

    1. Yes, I was coming to the same conclusion today, that I will just be finding a bunch of small things for her and giving up on the idea of having that one big "wow" gift. Littler kids are so much easier!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!
