Monday Musings

For  the week of October 21st, 2013

Outside My Window...I think our warm spell is done. This week, especially towards the end of the week, looks downright chilly. I am really not sure I am ready for the cold! Time to get the woodstove going.

Things I'm Thinking About...Getting ready for Halloween. We are a little slow this year, but tomorrow we will hopefully get our decorations up. The kids have their costumes, so that is something. Grace is not sure whether she wants to Trick or Treat this year (she is 12). It's kind of sad, really! I told her that I will happily make her up a little basket of candy if she doesn't want to knock on doors. But it still feels sad, she's growing up, you know?

In My Garden...I am expecting a frost this week, which means the end of many plants that have been hanging on. I do think the kale and Swiss chard will go a couple of more months  though, as long as we cover them from snow.

In the Barnyard... Our goat hoof trimming over the weekend resulted in a little nick and one goat having a foot wrapped up. Trimming goat hooves is not an easy thing to do!

In Our Kitchen....We did not make our Skeleton Cupcakes last week, so they are the top priority cooking project this week. The kids also have their hearts set on Rotten Apple Punch.

In Our Homeschool... We hopefully "row" our first book this week. We will also start doing some activities from our Halloween Unit. I am planning to devote the last hour of our school day to working on our Halloween activities.

Creating....I didn't quite finish my afghan, but it is close. I have a scarf almost finished too. And incidentally, this is the hat I finished for Rose last month.

The "stripe" was not part of the design. I flipped the stitches or something at one point by mistake, creating the stripe and making a couple of tiny holes...which I noticed after I took the photos. But Grace was able to fix those. It is so nice to have a child that knits better than you!

Reading and Watching. I am reading a Sophie Hannah book. Rose and I have been reading lots of Halloween books. We watched another episode of The Story of US. I watched several episodes of The Pioneer Woman when I couldn't sleep this week. Really hoping I will get more sleep this week!

Plans For the Week Ahead...Mostly, I am just hoping we can stay healthy! Rose has a pretty bad outbreak of hives right now and we are not sure if it is due to a virus or not. This is our first experience with hives and I can't believe how awful they can get! I think the next couple days will be focused on keeping her distracted and (mostly) content. Hopefully it will be short-lived.

Hope you have a great week!

  1. Hope the hives don't last! My son used to break out into hives every time he got chilly - something called cold urticarial. It was hideous, and he would itch like crazy. Thankfully he's outgrowing it. Love the hat!

  2. Thanks! She seems to be on the mend this evening. Hopefully it will stay that way. I cannot imagine this happening regularly and am glad to hear your son is outgrowing it! Thanks for stopping by:)
