Monday Musings

For  the week of September 23, 2013

Outside My Window...Chilly mornings, warm afternoons, and breezy, cool evenings. I really do love fall. As long as I have lots of layers on, that is!

Things I'm Thinking About... The many, many things that tend to pile up on the to-do list in September. I am thinking I need to go back to one master to-do list, with items listed in priority order. There will never be enough time to get everything done. Easy to tell myself, harder to actually accept, but very definitely true.

In My Garden...The basil is all stored away. The tomatoes still need dealing with. I roasted several pans this week to freeze and we have made lots of salsa. If I can squeeze it in this week, I want to can some green salsa with all of the green tomatoes hanging out on the windowsills.

In the Barnyard... We had a chicken death this week. We have lost a few chickens, so this is nothing new to us, but this is the first time one was lost to an illness rather than predation. Keeping an eye on the rest of the flock and hoping they stay healthy.

In Our Kitchen....We went apple picking so it is all about apple desserts this week. An apple pie over the weekend, apple crisp tomorrow night. Maybe some dried apples too.

In Our Homeschool....Debating the merits of handwriting books. James finished his. I have to admit that I see very little progress with the handwriting books. Both boys write pretty neatly in the handwriting book itself, but it does not transition to their other work. I am thinking that I will not order him the next book in the series, but focus more on penmanship during copywork.  I am on the lookout for free online sheets to teach cursive, which I do want him to learn.

Creating.....I learned to knit on circular needles and have been making a hat for Rose. I was pretty excited with my progress until Grace pointed out that I must have flipped the stitches at one point, because there were several rows of garter stitch in the middle of the stockinette stitch. It looks intentional though, so I am plugging ahead hoping to keep things straight. Knitting does not come naturally to me!

Reading and Watching...I ran out of library books, so I have decided to re-read my Agatha Christie books. I loved these as a teenager and have a pretty good collection of them. By now I should have forgotten "whodunit" so they should be like new. This week we watched Return of the Jedi with the kids (for the umpteenth time), and A Mighty Wind without them.

Plans For the Week Ahead...We never got around to stacking that firewood. Maybe this week? A few doctor appointments, a walk in the woods, all the usual routine, plus lots of visiting with family for the weekend. It's hard to believe this is the last full week of September.

Hope you have a great week!

  1. I always had good luck with free printable worksheets from the Amazing Handwriting Worksheet Generator. That reminds me, I should start Cassia on cursive...

    Have a great week!

  2. And I am sorry about your chicken! We lost one, once, to our dog. So far the rest are hanging in there!
