For the week of September 9, 2013
Outside My Window...It is chilly out there! I am afraid that our nights of eating dinner on the back porch are numbered. We have pretty much given up on having breakfast out there. There is a definite nip in the air before the sun comes up and then again once it dips below the trees. Some of our trees have already started turning color. Fall is on the way!
Things I'm Thinking About... Balance. Still. I really find these first two weeks of September a balancing act. We have gotten used to a certain way of being and doing, and now schedules are changing, new activites are starting up and familiar ones resuming, sweatshirts need to be dug out of storage, and most afternoons aren't quite warm enough for the pool time everyone has gotten used to. This week will see everything in full swing, including all our outside commitments and schooling. I am sure there will be much more to ponder about balance and how to find it in the weeks to come.
In My Garden...We dug potatoes this weekend. What a lot of work! They did very well, even though I gave up on trying to keep the potato beetles off of them. Right now they are all spread out on newspaper to dry out before storing them...somewhere. We don't have a root cellar handy, so someplace to keep them dry, cool, and not sprouting is in order. Just not sure yet where that might be! We also harvested some butternut squash and I was pretty pleased with how they turned out!
In the Barnyard... We got brave this weekend and combined our duck flock. So far, so good. Tonight is the first night they will all sleep under one roof. Next up is combining the chicken flocks.
In Our Kitchen....Lots of tomato dishes. This week's menu includes tomato cobbler and tomato chips. And maybe oven-dried cherry tomatoes. We have loads this year.
In Our Homeschool....We are back at it this week after a week off and I am hoping for smooth sailing. We are scheduled to start Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze, our second Sonlight read-aloud for Core F. We will also be registering for the National Mythology Exam this week.
Creating.....I finished yet another afghan square during our weekly movie night and started another one. I have not been back to my cross-stitch project in what feels like forever and I miss it! We finally picked out a paint color to paint our porch ceiling-the next house project on the list.
Reading and Watching...I am reading The Sister by Poppy Adams. This week we watched Matchpoint without the kids and We Bought a Zoo with them. (I thought the first one was much better).
Plans For the Week Ahead...The first gymnastics class of the year-and she is so very excited:). Apple picking. A new to us Lego club and a familiar bookclub at the library. And I am really, really, trying to take more pictures this week.
Hope you have a great week!
