Outside My Window...The leaves are starting to fall. That means raking, and lots of it, is not far behind. Not so much looking forward to that! The weather looks great for the week though, a string of perfect almost-fall days.
Things I'm Thinking About... Getting ready for fall. We are having firewood delivered and getting ready to put the glass in on the back porch. The air conditioners are out and the windows in the house are staying shut more and more. I am looking forward to sitting by the woodstove and fireplace again...but I am not in too much of a hurry.
In My Garden...The potatoes we dug last week are going to dry out a bit more and then I will store them. I am thinking of putting them in baskets covered with newspapers, inside a closet or cabinet. Light causes potatoes to turn green. I think I probably should have covered them during their drying out stage because some of the smaller ones are turning green already. Sigh. Live and learn, I guess. I am also freezing basil this week. I have not tried this before, but my general procedure is to wash the leaves, let them dry, freeze them on plates, then transfer the leaves to a freezer bag. Pesto in winter would be a very good thing.
In the Barnyard... The chicken flocks are mostly combined. They are now sharing a run, at least. Hopefully they will all move into the same coop sometime this week. We have not been getting very many eggs and are always perilously close to having to buy a dozen at the store. We are hoping the new chickens will start laying soon.
In Our Kitchen....I am sick of canning tomatoes after just one canning session, so now I am focusing on roasting and freezing. I slice them, sprinkle them with olive oil and salt, and stick them in a 300 degree oven until they shrivel. Then I just cool and freeze them. It's easy and makes the house smells great. These will be really nice on pasta or pizza in the snowy depths of January.
Dr. Funster's logic, they are just not ready and it is causing a lot of frustration. So Grace (12) is going to try level B1, while Christopher (10) tries A1.
Creating.....I want to get back to working on house projects, even though gardening season isn't quite over. I've started a little scrapbook of ideas torn from magazines and I am having a lot of fun with it. It is nothing fancy, just a spiral notebook with pasted pictures. My own little inspiration journal.
Reading and Watching...I am reading Kind of Cruel. This week we watched Touching the Void without the kids and The Goonies with them. Talk about a flashback to my childhood:)
Plans For the Week Ahead...We really need to get the fall clothes out of storage. There will be firewood stacking, to be sure. And I am hoping to go apple picking because I really need some apple crisp. It is feeling like that time of year.
Hope you have a great week!
