Monday Musings

For July 15th, 2013

Outside My Window...Back in another heat wave. It's supposed to be in the 90's all week. And humid. Makes me really glad we decided to homeschool year-round. No one wants to be out in this heat for very long anyway!

Things I'm Thinking About....Simplifying. Every time I hit about week three of a new homeschool year I start thinking about what I can cut from my grand plans. I always overplan and overestimate how much time we have to do things. I really can't see us spending much more than 3-4 hours per day on structured learning. Just don't see it happening while still having time to do other (just as important!) things. Pondering...

In My Garden...Still picking tons of raspberries every day. Some go in the freezer, most we just eat. Still battling pests on the potatoes, and now the squash too. The green beans are in and really, really good. We had some of our own carrots this week, which was super exciting! I have never been able to grow carrots before this year. I have started freezing some of our kale since everyone is getting sick of eating it. I think it will be nice to have some in the freezer to pull out and toss into a stew or soup later on.

In the Barnyard... We have been trying to integrate our new batch of ducks in with our first batch. It is not going well. There are only two ducks left of our original batch but they are not wanting anything to do with the newcomers. Still trying to figure out how to get them all under one roof companionably! We also need to integrate our new chickens with an existing flock. We lost one of our hens to a coyote over the weekend, and while we are now very used to such things, it is still sad.

Food, and the Cooking Thereof....I finally got around to making a batch of rhubarb jam over the weekend. We taught Grace how to make and freeze basil pesto and told her that is her job for the summer:). Our basil is doing great this year, which is rare!

In Our Homeschool....The boys are off to camp, but Grace and I will be working our way through week 2 of Sonlight Core F and hopefully starting week 3.

Creating..... I count the jam making as creative. It feels very creative to me. I love seeing the jars all lined up on my pantry shelves. I am also in the process of setting up a photo sharing website with Grace so she has somewhere to post photos for friends and family to see.

Reading and Watching...Still reading The Help. I also got Homeschool Open House, thanks to Gillian mentioning it on her blog-otherwise I would not have known it existed! We watched Madagascar 2 with the kids and Double Indemnity without them. We also tried to watch Ghost World, but gave up halfway.

Plans For the Week Ahead...The boys are headed to tennis camp every morning this week, plus we have two doctor/dental appointments, a trip to the craft store, a visit with friends, and this weekend the kids are all sleeping over with family so we will have the weekend to ourselves. Still no clue what to do yet!

Hope you have a great week!

  1. Wow, there seems to be a lot going on! Our basil is thriving this year too, and I need to get into pesto making soon. I read somewhere too about a fennel pesto made with pumpkin seeds, which I might have to try since I have bronze fennel that's seven feet tall!

    Hope you enjoy the book!
