Honestly, reading this book is like taking a mini vacation to a wilderness cabin where you live off the land, hunt your own food, and sleep in a hollowed-out tree (!). Except of course, you don't have to do all the work! We read the first book, in which Sam runs away to his old family farmland in the mountains, and sets up camp on his own. He raises a baby peregrine falcon and uses it to help him catch rabbits and other small game. He also fishes for supper, learns to make a fire, and makes his own furniture, dishes, and anything else he needs from the wilderness around him. It's a truly excellent adventure story, and very inspiring. Grace (11) has read all three books several times, so it's definitely not a "boys only" book either. Not to give away the story, but Sam's sister joins him in the woods in the second book and puts her own spin on things. Jean Craighead George has written many other books in addition to this one, and we will definitely be reading more in the future.
And that's our review for the week! Thanks for stopping by, and happy reading!
Nice to meet you! I'm adding this series to my library list. I have one little boy (very young) who loves all things outdoors. Perhaps I'll test the first book with my girls :) Thank you for sharing these!
ReplyDeleteThis has been on my radar to read to my boys (or have them read themselves) for awhile. Thanks for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteWe have "My side of the mountain" on our shelf but haven't read it yet. Sounds like one we should add to our list!
