Read-Aloud Thursday

I recently stumbled on Hope is the Word's Read-Aloud Thursday and I thought-what a wonderful idea! We are all about books here, so a reason to post about them every week makes my heart flutter. Yes, we are that in love with our books.

Right now, Christopher (9) and I are reading through the My Side of the Mountain series by Jean Craighead George.We have the trilogy book which also includes Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain. I was a bit hesitant to begin this series with Christopher, because he has a short attention span and doesn't have a lot of patience for 'wordy' books. I have to say though, that this book is keeping him entirely spell-bound! It helps that he is into fishing and all things outdoors, just like the main character, Sam. We are all nature-lovers here, so this book is a great find for us.

Honestly, reading this book is like taking a mini vacation to a wilderness cabin where you live off the land, hunt your own food, and sleep in a hollowed-out tree (!). Except of course, you don't have to do all the work! We read the first book, in which Sam runs away to his old family farmland in the mountains, and sets up camp on his own. He raises a baby peregrine falcon and uses it to help him catch rabbits and other small game. He also fishes for supper, learns to make a fire, and makes his own furniture, dishes, and anything else he needs from the wilderness around him.It's a truly excellent adventure story, and very inspiring. Grace (11) has read all three books several times, so it's definitely not a "boys only" book either. Not to give away the story, but Sam's sister joins him in the woods in the second book and puts her own spin on things. Jean Craighead George has written many other books in addition to this one, and we will definitely be reading more in the future.
